Its a sad - and sadly common - state of affairs to think of life as a zero-sum game.When youre having a badeanstalt day, the thing you need most is a helping hand. If you havent given a hand to anyone else in the past - which youre not conditioned to do when you view others as competition - youre unlikely to get the help you need.Alternatively, if youve spent time helping others over the years, those around you are likely to do all they can for you.I heard a similar idea last year at thePodcast Movement conference. A speaker talked about how we, as podcasters, look at one another as competition. We each want to beNo. 1on iTunes. We dont want to help each other for fear that well lose listeners.Then, the speaker asked What would happen if we assumed there was room for everyone? What would happen if we assumed that we could all succee d in some way?If we changed our assumptions, itslikely that we would help each other more. We would talk to each other more. Wed share ideas and suggestions.We would all be more successful - together.Theres a strong temptation to be the best. We are taught to think this way as early as elementary school, where teachers rank us according to reading level or other distinctions. In continues into high school, where we fight to become the valedictorian or the best athlete. In college, there are scholarships and internships and letters of recommendation to be won. Theres always a ranking, and nobody wants to lose.But things dont really work this way. Life isnt about your solo struggle against the rest of the world. In life and business,we dont actually get ahead on our strength alone. We get ahead because of the people on our teams. We get ahead when we share our talents with others and lean on those whose strengths complement our own.Even if you could get ahead on your own, what would the prize be at the end of the journey?With whomcould you share your winnings? So, how can you keep your cool?First and most obvious, respect the CEOs time by preparing for your interview. Your answers should come from an informed and authentic place, not a memorized and rehearsed one. And remember, youre there to interview her just as much as shes there to interview you. But if you really want to impress your CEO (and follow in the footsteps of Jeff Bezos, who banned PowerPoints in executive meetings ), youll skip the slides in favor of an in-depth conversation that digs into the story of the topic at hand. Providing your CEO with the narrative context he needs to make a decision is the most effective use of his time. Youve heard the standard advice about talking to Important People Be yourself. Dont talk politics. Know when to exit the conversation. But if you really want to impress a CEO or just walk away from the conversation without feeling like your foot is in your mouth we recommend heading into work with a few g o-to conversation starters in your pocket, like the following As with most interactions, how you say something is just as important as what you say. With just a little preparation, you can be prepared for a warm, casual conversation with your CEO.Are you worried youre so nervous around your CEO that you might accidentally hug him or sputter a mouthful of jibberish when he asks you what youre working on? These extraordinary but true examples show us that no one is immune to awkwardness around the highest employee on the totem pole. After all, you have your own to-do list and youre having trouble getting through it because of all the extra work being thrown on your plate. And thats exactly why you should explore them for your own sake. Maybe your boss wants to put you on a track for a promotion. You could also be a member of an understaffed team full of people who are going above and beyond. But there are also times when it feels like you have to leave your current job, when in reality things are just a little uncomfortable right now. Take that deep breath, ask yourself some tough questions, and chances are that youll realize that you still like your job.

First place honors and a corresponding check for $10,000 went to the University of Michigan team for TurtleCell, a protective iPhone 5 case featuring proprietary technology that builds tangle-free, retractable earbuds right into the case. Second place went to Sparo Labs of Washington University in St. Louis for its Low Cost Spirometer, a novel solution for asthma sufferers around the world.
